Bartender: Kyle Hofmeister of the Jury Room and Tip Top

Jesse Tigges, Columbus Alive

Many have heard Kyle Hofmeister's voice as a DJ for CD102.5, or seen him bartending at The Jury Room or Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails. He spoke with Alive about his two awesome jobs, some good drinking music and how bartending and deejaying are actually similar.

How long have you been with CD102.5?

I started interning in August of 2010. I got hired on, and my first air shift was the midnight shift New Year's Eve 2010. It was a mess, but a lot of fun. I rung in the New Year with a new gig over there.

What's some good drinking music?

A Sabbath album is always good for drinking. That's my party hard with all my college buddies kind of music. I've been really into the new Silversun Pickups album. The track "The Pit," which we just started playing at the station, is my total jam right now.

I love having a beer and playing videogames - it's my relaxing time. When I'm doing that, I listen to Anamanaguchi. It's real positive, up-tempo, bloopy-beepy music.

What's your beer?

Southern Tier Pumking is the seasonal beer I wait for. It's super sweet, malty and you can taste that pumpkin - they're not shy about it. Another beer that used to be available in Columbus, but I haven't seen it since I lived in Louisville, is the Bluegrass Brewing Co.'s Bourbon Barrel Stout.

Are bartending and deejaying similar at all?

At their core they're pretty different. They're the same in that … it's not about me. It's about people trying to get a beer and some food. Same thing at CD102.5; it's about the people who want listen to music. I'm not trying to make the Kyle show. It's just, hey guys, listen to this awesome music with me.

If you could have a drink with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Socrates. He always seemed like that perfect mix of practical life - how do I live - and trying to make sense of the world. So I'd really just like to know what that guy was thinking. Supposedly he was really ugly and could drink anybody under the table.
