Night out: Tastings at Weiland's Gourmet Market, Adam Roelle

Weiland’s Gourmet Market was voted Best Liquor Store and Best Beer Shop by Alive readers in 2012 for our annual Best of Columbus poll. Readers were surely impressed by Weiland’s collection of hundreds of beer and liquor varieties — many of them rare and craft editions. What’s quickly become one of my favorite aspects is the beer, wine and liquor tastings hosted by the store.

Every weekend the store has beer and wine tastings on Friday and Saturday afternoons and usually a liquor tasting on Friday. Ohio law allows up to five liquor tastings in store a month, and Weiland’s Beer and Spirits Manager Adam Roelle tries to get as many as legally possible. Roelle has an extensive knowledge of all things booze-related and wants to give his customers the opportunity to sample some of the best on the market. A scotch and beer tasting last Friday presented such an opportunity, along with the chance to try some new beers at an economical price.

A representative from Dewar’s served four selections: Dewar’s White Label, 12 Year Old, and 18 Year Old and Dewar’s single malt Aberfeldy. Aberfeldy is the base used by Dewar’s for its other blended scotches and was a peaty — but not too smoky — and smooth spirit. The others didn’t have as strong of an oak flavor, and the 18 Year Old was quite excellent. At $.50 for a sample, the tasting is a great way to try some high quality stuff without breaking the bank.

Three Scottish beers from Innis & Gunn were also available. Innis & Gunn beer was originally brewed and barreled so whiskey could be flavored in the used barrels, hence the slogan “Born by Accident.” Innis & Gunn has a solid Scottish ale and rum and spiced rum finished options that are even more flavorful. Beer samples are also $.50 each.

The upcoming bourbon tasting on Oct. 26 is the most exciting — at least for this bourbon lover — tasting Weiland’s has had yet. That event features Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Eagle Rare Single Barrel Bourbon, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon and Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey.
