Daily Distraction: Listen to Enya and watch protesters tear down statues
Earlier this week, Columbus State Community College announced it would be removing the statue of Christopher Columbus from its campus.
Now, City Hall is set to follow suit.
Mayor Andrew Ginther announced today that the Columbus statue outside of City Hall on Broad Street would be removed and placed into storage in the coming weeks. In its place, the mayor has tasked the Columbus Arts Commission with leading "an effort to replace the statue with public artwork that better reflects the people of Columbus and offers a shared vision for the future."
“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past,” Ginther said in a press release.
In the spirit of Columbus' removal, here's a video of protesters toppling statues of oppressive historical figures, all set to the soothing sounds of Enya's "Only Time."
