Daily Distraction: Watch Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires cover Bon Iver

During the pandemic, singer/songwriter/violinist Amanda Shires has been hosting a series of livestream concerts she titled I So Lounging, and last week she invited husband/songwriter/guitarist Jason Isbell and keys player Peter Levin to contribute.

The session's theme was "songs with a girl's name in the title," and the trio chose to cover "Ariel Ramirez" by Richard Buckner, "Layla" by Derek & the Dominoes and "Beth/Rest" by Bon Iver. The whole thing is worth a listen (for the banter and the music), but I'm unsurprisingly partial to the Bon Iver cover, which Isbell sings. Actually, he starts the song, messes up a falsetto vocal line, then restarts. Might as well acknowledge your mistakes and give it another try, right? Check it out below; the restarted version of "Beth/Rest" starts just before the 18-minute mark.

And if you have any doubt about my love for Justin Vernon's music, feel free to revisit "A dozen years with Bon Iver," or, as the Cleveland Press Club Awards presenter recently introduced it, "A dozen years with Bob Iver."
