Daily Distraction: Listen to a new song by Joel Oliphint's nemesis

Alive associate editor Joel Oliphint is on vacation this week, which means there's nothing he can do about this headline or anything else that I'm writing here.

Anyway, back in 2016, Joel endured a difficult interview with a largely indifferent Ryley Walker, which has since evolved into a running joke in the Alive offices, as these things sometimes do. For my part, the rapper Wale remains the only artist on whom I've ever hung up. And perhaps my favorite-ever Staff Pick blurb emerged from an emailed interview request that evaporated when I wouldn't commit to "burning down a fattie."

Responding on Twitter to a different writer who expressed frustration over a past interview, Walker wrote, "Sorry dog. I know interviews are a mutual vibe. try to be on often as I can. Also very aware this is not a real life problem. Next time will be a home run."

And, hey, we get it! Not everyone can be on at all times, and we all have bad days. (I'm keeping the headline, regardless.)

It also hasn't impacted how much either of us enjoy Walker's music (even Joel!), which is particularly true for me of the musician's killer new album, Course in Fable (Husky Pants), which Walker described as being written "in a state of joy" in this excellent and revealing interview with the Guardian, which you should absolutely read. (This must have been that home run of a conversation the musician promised on Twitter back in 2018.)

Once you're done with that, give a listen to album highlight "Axis Bent" below.
