New movie releases for the weekend of July 10

Brad Keefe, Columbus Alive

New in theaters:

The little yellow fellows from "Despicable Me" get their own movie? Sounds adorable. Also, bonus points for smashing the glass ceiling with a female supervillain voiced by Sandra Bullock.

"The Gallows"

A group of high-school students recreate a school play that ended in tragedy, which will probably end in more tragedy because this is yet another freakin' found-footage horror movie.

Limited screenings:

"Fantastic Mr. Fox"

The Gateway Film Center's From Book to Film series - which features free admission with a library card - continues this week with Wes Anderson's delightful foray into stop-motion animation. It's cussing great!

Alive recommends:

"Me and Earl and the Dying Girl"

This warm, funny and moving coming-of-age indie is kind of the antidote to the big beasts of summer blockbusters. It won't stick around for much longer.
