Preview: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey at the Wexner Center

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

The Flaming Lips aren't the only oddballs out of Oklahoma. On their acclaimed "Race Riot Suite," Tulsa combo Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey plunges into the past and pulls back something striking for these times. Exploring the 1921 melee that destroyed their town's flourishing black business district (known as "Black Wall Street"), the 12-movement conceptual piece buzzes with vitality and tension alike. They'll breeze through it with help from guest tenor sax player Mark Southerland and brass players from the Ohio State School of Music this Saturday at the Wex.
