Staff Pick: tUnE-yArDs

Merrill Garbus, the woman behind tUnE-yArDs, is a gloriously spazzy mad-scientist type who will not compromise her distinct musical worldview (or syntax) for your convenience. Her yowling, face-painted rhythm bombs are the rare instance of genuine innovation in trend-mongering popular music. Of course, being original doesn’t always correlate to being awesome, and indeed tUnE-yArDs is great in concert but can be grating on record. (Sophomore LP “w h o k i l l” made my Top 10 last year, but I rarely listen to the whole thing at once.) Fortunately, Monday’s appearance at the Wexner Center presents Garbus and band in the flesh, where they flourish. Delicate Steve, the band’s closest thing to a kindred spirit, opens at 9 p.m. sharp.
