A$AP Rocky at the Newport

When singles “Purple Swag” and “Peso” emerged last summer, A$AP Rocky looked like one of countless promising figures behind NYC’s rap resurgence. When he signed with RCA/Polo Grounds for a rumored $3 million, Rocky entered a bigger conversation: He’s being groomed as a god of the game.

Though he only has one mixtape and a handful of stray guest spots to his name (proper debut “LongLiveA$AP” has been delayed twice per rap tradition), he’s already honed his brand of syrupy, high-fashion hip-hop into something potent and distinct. Pop’s leading ladies certainly think so; Rihanna let him kiss her during their VMAs-opening performance together, while glassy-eyed starlet Lana Del Rey cast him as JFK in her “National Anthem” video.

Matched with underground elites Schoolboy Q and Danny Brown plus his own A$AP Mob, Rocky’s show might be worth skipping the Buckeyes for.
