Mike Watt & The Missingmen at The Basement

Mike Watt’s tenure in Minutemen was enough to render him a rock icon; following that group with a second classic unit, fIREHOSE, further cemented his legend. Now he’s bringing his current trio, The Missingmen, on the road to perform his third rock opera.

“Hyphenated-Man,” released in 2010, comprises 30 quick portraits of characters such as “Bird-In-The-Helmet-Man,” “Confused-Parts-Man” and “Blowing-It-Out-Both-Ends-Man.” Each track is a jolting, bass-driven blast likely to be greedily gobbled by Minutemen fans. It can’t match the urgency of “Double Nickels on the Dime,” and it breaches the goofiness threshold at times (“Fyingpan-Man”: guilty), but on balance “Hyphenated-Man” proves Watt’s genius has not run dry nearly three decades later.

Lite and Harboring Ghosts will set the stage Wednesday at The Basement.
