Tour accident tests Blueprint's perseverance
Blueprint and tourmates DJ Rare Groove and Supastition were fortunate to walk away following an accident in rural Iowa. The MC's 12-passenger cargo van, however, was not so lucky.
Writing on his blog, Blueprint, born Al Shepard, discussed the accident, which occurred as the trio made its way from Kansas City, Missouri to a scheduled Thursday tour stop in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in harrowing detail. The rapper was driving on a back road and slid through an unseen stop sign, where a car moving full speed then struck the rear of the van.
"Upon impact the windows on [the] side of the van shattered," he wrote. "Our van was knocked into a spin, all the way across the intersection. The force of the impact was so strong that our van flipped over once or twice," eventually settling on its side in the grass on the edge of the road.
Miraculously, there were no injuries reported by anyone involved, according to Blueprint, only "scratches and cuts."
"Personally, I am still shaken up and disappointed in myself for not seeing that stop sign and putting the lives of my friends in jeopardy," he continued. "In my 13 years of touring, this was the first time I had ever been in an accident, and it is one that we are very fortunate/lucky/blessed to walk away from."
While Blueprint's initial instinct was to cancel the remainder of the tour, which was scheduled to run through an August 1 homecoming show at Double Happiness, his spirits were buoyed by a phone conversation with his mother ("[She] told me that if we can find a way to continue the tour that we should") and a police officer who played "Perspective," a track off the MC's 2014 release Respect the Architect, while driving the crew to the nearest city.
"Hearing that song play lifted my spirits a bit and made me think about how maybe I wasn't recognizing just how fortunate I was just to be alive," he said.
Blueprint could have taken similar strength from "Persevere," off this year's excellent King No Crown, a song about continuing to grind even when situations feel dire. "Recognize that the reason that you here/ Is only cause you figured out a way to persevere," he rhymes.
Taking a page from this playbook, the rapper has started raising funds to purchase a new van with the hopes of completing his tour. Anyone wishing to make a contribution can do so by visiting the GoFundMe site here.
