Concert preview: Kentucky-born singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson breathes new life into country tradition
On the surface, at least, the Kentucky-born country singer appears drawn to the more psychedelic end of the musical spectrum, a leaning reflected in everything from the title of his excellent sophomore LP, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, to the various substances he sings about on "Turtles All the Way Down." "Marijuana, LSD, Psilocybin and DMT/ They all changed the way I see," he sighs. Even so, his songs are heavily steeped in country tradition, and it's easy to imagine the musician sharing a smoke-clouded tour bus with the likes of Willie Nelson.
Old Crow Medicine Show headlines the show.
