Daily Distraction: 'Watch it Burn' with Blueprint
The Columbus rapper returns with a new 7-inch single
Al Shepard, aka Columbus rapper Blueprint, is always creating. The man is a filmmaker and the author of multiple books. He hosts podcasts. He makes and sells beats. But it had been awhile since we last heard new music from 'Print.
That changed late last month when he issued a new single, "Watch it Burn," which isn't just a song Blueprint released impromptu into the digital ether (though it is available to stream or download); the new song is out on red 7-inch vinyl via Weightless Recordings, complete with instrumental B-side.
This week, Blueprint also released a video to accompany the single, which finds the rapper roaming the night with a red, flaming flare and spitting head-turning rhymes that serve to remind listeners why he's still considered one of our city's best emcees. Directed by Blueprint and shot by Visual House, it's a lyrical onslaught, punctuated in the video with shots revealing stacks of books by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Cheikh Anta Diop, Shahrazad Ali, Elijah Muhammad and more. As is often the case with Blueprint, the song isn't just a revelation; it's an education.
