Golf: The Memorial Tournament
The Memorial Tournament is back for its 36th year. If you're going, you're in for a great time - the field is a who's who of famous golfers (and one infamous golfer), and the tournament is a chance for the rest of us to see Muirfield Village.
If you're not going, whoop it up at a bar or restaurant in Dublin, (see our Eat & Drink section this week) and enjoy the air conditioning and indoor plumbing that are difficult to come by on the course.
If you're just plain avoiding, this is just a reminder that the tournament is happening and that you should find another route to your favorite Sawmill Road retail experience.
Can I still attend the tournament? Yes, if you're willing to pay a premium. Only patron- and clubhouse-level badges are available, and those start at $155. Call 877-MT-BADGE for tickets; you can't buy tickets at the gate.
I just want to go to [insert name of store or restaurant near Dublin]. How can I avoid traffic?Take a look at the travel routes recommended by the tournament. The scene at I-270 at Sawmill Road is one to avoid if you're trying to get somewhere other than the tournament. Get to your shopping bliss from points south.
Will I recognize any of the players? Yes, even if you have only a passing interest in golf, you will recognize some of these names: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Davis Love III, Ricky Barnes, K.J. Choi, Stuart Appleby, Louis Oosthuizen, Stewart Cink.
What should I wear? Keep things classy with casual golf wear. That's code for a collared shirt, slacks, shorts or skirt and comfortable shoes. Don't forget the sunscreen - the forecast is seasonably warm and sunny.
Can Iask Tiger/Phil/Bubba for hisautograph? Not until he has completed his round for the day.
How about a photo? No. Just no.
Why is it called the Memorial Tournament? Jack Nicklaus, who founded the Memorial Tournament in 1976, wanted to create an event that would honor great golfers of history and the people who helped make the game what it is today. Proceeds from the tournament benefit charitable causes for children and adults in and around Columbus.
