Staff pick: Get a free education in structural inequality

For the last month, a lot of white people have begun educating themselves about race in America, filling in gaps left vacant during high school (and college) history classes. You can see evidence of that in the recent list of New York Times nonfiction paperback best-sellersWhite Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, The Color of Law by Richard RothsteinStamped from the Beginning by Ibram Kendi, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and more. There are other ways to continue that education locally, including a free, open-to-the-public webinar happening today at 3 p.m. via the Department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State. The program is titled "Black Matters 101: Dismantling Structural Inequalities," and panelists include Donna Ford from OSU's College of Education & Human Ecology, Darrell M. Gray from the Wexner Medical Center, Audra Hanners from the College of Nursing, Darryl Hood from the College of Public Health and Kara Young from the Sociology department. Register here. "This series of virtual webinars addresses the current state of national affairs as they pertain to Black people. The health pandemic created by COVID-19 has brought racism to the forefront as a public health crisis that has been and continues to be an age-old detriment to African Americans. The health disparities crisis is compounded by the persistence of police killings and civilian vigilantism that traumatize black communities. This webinar series brings together educators, students, community activists, civic leaders, and the general public to discuss topics emanating from the volatile moment of the pandemics, and, importantly, to develop action-oriented strategies for social justice."
