Staff Pick: Johnny Cupcakes at Rivet
Johnny Cupcakes is a clothing line with an origin story set in Massachusetts, and a success story set across the country. The brand is known for its designs that poke fun at pieces of pop culture by replacing parts of iconic imagery with a cupcake - the Statue of Liberty's torch, the skull in a skull and cross bones, the love in "Make love not war" - and also for being a sick cupcake shop that doesn't actually sell cupcakes (display cases are kitschy ovens and confectionary cases).
This fall Johnny Cupcakes set off on a rowdy Coffin Tour, which will make a stop this evening at Rivet gallery and toy shop in the Short North. The Johnny Cupcakes pop-up shop will have limited edition T-shirts and other items for sale. Many play on the spooky season we have just entered. Example: The headless horseman tee where the pumpkin in really a cupcake. A pumpkin cupcake, I assume.
